Furnace Replacement: Is It Time?

One of the biggest choices you may face as a homeowner is whether to repair or replace your heating system. We won’t pretend there’s an easy answer to this question. However, there are a few signs that it might be time to replace your old furnace with a newer, more efficient system.

When you’re ready to talk about furnace replacement, call one of our licensed HVAC technicians to discuss your options.

My Furnace is 15-30 Years Old

The average furnace is designed to operate an average of 20-25 years. You can increase the life cycle of your furnace by hiring a certified technician to perform annual maintenance. However, even with regular maintenance, we recommend you start contemplating replacement about 15 years after your original installation.

My Furnace is Loud During Standard Operation

Most older furnaces will make a loud noise when they initially kick-on, which may not necessarily be a sign they need to be replaced. However, noises such as rattling, popping or screeching are signed you need a furnace replacement. These sounds may indicate loose ducts or parts or a damaged blower motor.

Temperature Fluctuations

Sudden changes in the temperature between different rooms in your home are a sign it’s time to consult with an HVAC technician about repair or replacement. Your furnace will slowly lose efficiency over time, which means it can no longer distribute heat evenly throughout the upper and lower levels of your home.

You can help alleviate these by weather sealing your windows and doors or investing in heavy drapery for the winter.

Dirt or Soot is Present Near the Registers

Excess dust and soot throughout the home is an indication that your old furnace is producing too much Carbon Dioxide. This soot buildup is commonly found near the furnace register and grille. A register is an air duct cover that is able to regulate airflow throughout the home. If you notice dirt or soot around the furnace register, this is a common warning it’s time to consider furnace replacement.

High Energy Bills or Repairs

After a furnace reaches its peak lifespan of 15 years, it becomes harder for the system to evenly distribute heat throughout your home. This causes a huge spike in your energy bills each month. If you’re wondering when its time to perform a furnace replacement, take a look at the total cost of your next repair. If the total cost of the repair project is more than half the cost of putting in a new furnace, it’s time to replace your system with a new model.

If you’re already shelling out annually to fix your old furnace, you can put a stop to those extra fees right away with a replacement. At City Air Mechanical, we offer furnace installation, furnace repair and heat pump installation. We service the Bismarck and Dickinson areas and are happy to walk through your options with you at any time.
